He was born in Hangchow, Chekiang, China in 1870.
At the age of 23 Mr.Wu Lei-Chitan passed the imperial examinations and received the degree of Chu-jen (second degree). 5 years later (1898) he received the Chin-shih (third degree) and later became a Hanlin scholar.
In the very beginning Wu Lei-Chitan served as a director of the Provincial College of Chekiang from 1906 to 1909. Then he was appointed a compiler in the Hanlin Academy in 1910. From 1912 to 1915 he was a head of the secretariat in the Ministry of Education in Peking, and after that a councillor in the Ministry of Education (1925-1926).
He gave lecturs on Confucianism and Christianity at Yenching University in 1924 and resigned his position in the Ministry of Education in 1926 to become professor of Chinese at Yenching University and was shortly after made vice-president. In 1928 he became a vice-minister of education, but resided this post after being elected Chancellor of Yenching University in February, 1929, which position he later held as well as a professorship in the department of Chinese.
