Mr. Chen was a secretary to the Commissioner of Education of Hupeh from 1907 to 1908.During the years 1909 to 1913 he worked as a director of studies at Wenchow Middle School.
Chen Chuan-tung taught English and mathematics at St. John University between 1913 and 1917. He was a salt revenue collector at Taichow, Chekiang (Zhejiang) during the period of 1917-1922. Mr. Chen served as an assistant district inspector at Wutungchiao, Szechuen, since 1923.
He resumed his office as an acting Chuannan (Szechuen) district inspector in 1924. Chen Chuan-tung was an assistant Chinese secretary in the Chief Inspectorate, Peking from 1925 to 1928. He was appointed special deputy to Nanking in connection with the Question of restoration of the function of the Salt Gabelle May-June in 1927. Since 1929 he worked as a Hotung district inspector and concurrently supervisor of the Salt Police, Shansi.
