Li Chai-sum attended the Guangdong Military Academy and latter graduated from the Military College of Peking.
Mr. Li participated in the 1911 Revolution and served as chief-of-staff to the 22nd division of the Revolutionary Forces. He was appointed chief-of-staff to the 1st division of Guangdong Army in 1921. He assisted Dr. Sun Yat-sen in defeating Chen Chiun-ming (who then rebelled against Dr. Sun's Government) in 1924. Li Chai-sum acted as a defence commissioner of Wuzhou, Guangxi, in 1924. The same year he was appointed commander of the 4th Revolutionary Army. Mr. Li suppressed the "Peasant-labor Uprising" in Tungkiang, Guangdong, in 1927.
Since 1928 Li Chai-sum held the posts of a commander of the 8th Route Revolutionary Army, chief-of-staff to the Headquarters of the Nationalist Revolutionary Forces and chairman of the Canton Division of the Central Political Council. In 1928 he was appointed state councillor and chief of general staff of the National Government. Mr. Li was relieved of all his posts on account of his implication in the revolt of the Guangxi faction in Wuhan - against the Nationalist Government in 1928. He was enforced residence in Nanjing from 1928 to 1929. In 1931 Mr. Li was pardoned.
Around 1932 to 1933 Li Chai-sum served as an inspectior general of Military Training. He was a chairman of the "People's Government" in Fuzhou. Then he was was again relieved of all his posts by the National Government and expelled from the Kuomintang. Mr. Li lived in retirement since the collapse of the Independence Movement.
