Chen Yiao-yuan received his military education at the Baoting Military Officers’ College.
He joined the Army after graduation and soon became a brigadier-commander. Mr. Chen served as a defense commissioner of Hsuchow, and later as a commander-in-chief of the bandit-suppression Army and Military Governor of Anhui (Anhwei). He joined the Northern Punitive Elxpedition of the Nationalist Revolutionary Army in 1927 and was appointed Commander of the 37th Army and concurrently Commander of the Northern Route Army.
Chen Tiao-yuan was made a member of the Military Council in 1928. He also was a member of the Peiping Division of the Central Political Council. Since 1930 Mr. Chen became a member of the State Council. He fought against Yen Hsi-shan's forces in Shantung in 1930. From 1930 to 1932 Mr. Chen was appointed chairman of the Anhwei Provincial Government. And since 1933 he bacame a commander of the 1st Route Army.
In 1923 Mr. Chen occupied the position of the commander-in-chief of the Communist-suppression Reserve Forces of Jiangxi (Kiangsi), Hunan, Guangdong and Hubei (Hupeh). Since 1934 he worked as a chairman of the Military Advisory Council.
