Chao-tseng Shih was an attache to Chinese Legation in Washington, USA from 1893 till 1895 and Consul-General in New York, USA from 1896 till 1897. He worked also as a superintendent of the Hanyang Iron Works, Hupeh, China (Hubei, China) in 1897, commissioner of the Shanghai-Nanking Railway from 1905 till 1907 and managing-Director from 1907 till 1909.
Mr. Shih took position of Director of Peking-Hankow Railway in 1910, Director of China Merchants Inland Navigation Company and concurrently member of board of directors of China Merchants Steam Navigation Company from 1910 till 1912, Director of the Lunghai Railway from 1913 till 1922, promoter and a founder of the Central Hospital in Peking, China.
He travelled in Europe on mission in connection with the financial situation of Lunghai Railway in 1918 and retired from the service of Lunghai Hallway in 1922.
