Yannick Ponsero began skating at age 4. He represented the SG Annecy club and was coached by Didier Lucine for many years. Since the 2006-2007 season, he has been skating only at senior events.
Foreign the 2008-2009 Grand Prix series, Ponsero was assigned to Skate Canada and the Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai Trophy.
He was first after the short program in Skate Canada but dropped to 4th overall due to mistakes in the long program At the 2009 European Championships, Ponsero was 9th following the short program
At the 2010 European Championships, Ponsero was 3rd following the short program and 7th in the long program, finishing 6th overall. However, Ponsero did not compete at either the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver or the 2010 World Championships in Turin.
Foreign the 2010-2011 season, Ponsero was not entered into the Grand Prix series.
In January 2011, he announced that he had decided to take time off from skating in order to focus on his studies.
He is the 2009 French national champion. Ponsero won two medals at the World Junior Championships, a silver in 2005 and a bronze in 2006. He won the Coupe de Nice in 2007 and 2008. Ponsero then won his first Grand Prix medal, a bronze, at the Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai Trophy. He was an alternate for the Grand Prix Final. He won the long program with a new personal best, but missed out on a medal by 0.06 of a point.
