(This book is about the history of Danish/Norwegian partic...)
This book is about the history of Danish/Norwegian participation in the trans- Atlantic slave trade. It describes the organization of the trade, the participants, the challenge, and the link with the West Indies to where the slaves were transported for work on the sugar plantations. It describes Danish purchase of islands in the West Indies and traces how the decline in Dutch and British trade, and the abilities of the Danish administration led to a golden age in the Danish slave trade in the 1770s and 1780s. In that period, the Danish share in the total slave trade exceeded ten percent; and the decline in the trade with the growth of a new European consciousness heralded abolition.

(This is third title in Thorkild Hansen's classic trilogy ...)
This is third title in Thorkild Hansen's classic trilogy on the Atlantic slave trade, originally published in Danish in 1967; and the first major translation and publication of the work in English. In Europe and North America, few are aware that the beautiful and now wealthy Virgin Islands of St Thomas, St Croix and St Jan were once Danish settlements and outposts of the slave trade. Moreover that the question of the independence of the islands was never seriously considered by the Danes, who instead sold them to the US in 1917 for 25 million dollars, several decades after the official end of slavery. This was against the will of the majority of the islanders, who were opposed to rule by the Americans, wary of their iniquitous treatment of blacks.

archaeologist historian journalist writer
Thorkild was born on January 9, 1927, in Ordrup, Denmark.
Thorkild attended Holte Gymnasium and from 1945-47 studied literature at the University of Copenhagen.
Thorkild Hansen worked as a journalist and literary critic in Paris from 1947 to 1952. Hansen published two books of essays and worked as a correspondent for two Copenhagen newspapers, then joined several archeological expeditions that took him to Kuwait in 1960, Sudan in 1961, Hudson Bay, Canada in 1964, and Guinea in 1965.
Hansen’s two-volume work including Det lykkelige Arabien (1962) and Arabia Felix (1964) is an account of an eighteenth-century Danish expedition to Arabia. Hansen drew on the diaries of the expedition’s leader, archived material, and his own observations in describing the failed adventure. An English translation of his title Jens Munk was published in 1970 in the United States as The Way to Hudson Bay: The Life and Times of Jens Munk and in England as North West to Hudson Bay: The Life and Times of Jens Munk. A Choice reviewer said the book “is interesting, fills a historical gap, is skillfully written and translated, and is handsomely produced and illustrated.” Nora T. Corley, however, wrote in Library Journal that the biography “is a mixture of fact and fiction, and it is difficult to tell where one starts and the other leaves off; there is no bibliography, though frequent vague reference is made to other works.” Another reviewer, writing in the Times Literary Supplement, said that although “Thorkild Hansen has clearly taken great pains with his research in the Danish archival and printed sources ... some reservations remain... A novelist’s imagination sometimes takes over from the historian, and wild surmise occasionally masquerades as sober fact. But the admirable character of Jens Munk emerges in a much clearer light than before.” Antony Preston wrote in Geographical Journal that “one puts down this well-written book with compassion for the old sailor dismissed by his sovereign after a lifetime of service.”
