Career
He is the first junior to surpass the 10-second barrier. On March 29, 2014, Bromell tied the world junior record in the 100 metres, running a 10.01 at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, while representing Baylor University. Just one day before the race, Bromell came within.01 of the record with a 10.02.
Following the meet, Bromell was named "2014 Texas Relays Most Outstanding Performer." The last Baylor athlete to receive the same honor was Michael Johnson, 24 years earlier.
On June 13, 2014, Bromell ran 9.92 in the semifinals at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Men"s Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, but that result will not become a record because it was wind aided by a +2.2 mps wind. The following day, he ran 9.97 in the final, with a legal +1.8 mps wind.
Pending ratification, that should give him sole possession of the record. Bromell had previous brushes with the record in 2013 as a high school athlete at Gibbs High School in Saint St. Petersburg, Florida, running 9.99 while dusting an elite high school field in the Great Southwest Classic at altitude assisted Albuquerque, New Mexico.
However, that race could not count as a record due to the 4.0 mps wind assistance, which is double the allowable amount.
At the end of May 2014, Bromell ran a time of 9.77 at the Big 12 Championships. However, the time was nullified by the +4.2 mps aiding wind. The meet was at Lubbock, Texas where the altitude is just 8 meters below an elevation that would qualify marks for altitude assistance.
Meet officials had also reversed the direction of the race to take advantage of the wind.
Bromell"s time of 9.77 ranks equal to the ninth-fastest wind-aided 100 meters race of all time. In 2015, he returned to Eugene at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships, improving his personal best to 9.90 in the preliminary round.
At the 2015 United States of America Outdoor Track and Field Championships in June 2015, Bromell came second in the 100 metres, clocking a time of 9.96 and thus qualifying for the 2015 World Championships. In the heats, he ran 9.84 seconds which made him the 10th fastest man in history.
At the World Championships, Bromell qualified for the final of the 100 metres by running a time of 9.91 in the heats and then a 9.99 in the semifinals.
In the final, Bromell tied for third with a time of 9.92, finishing behind Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin.
