Grant was born on November 25, 1960 Augusta, Georgia, United States; the daughter of Burton Paine Grant and Gloria Grant.
Grant attended Harpeth Hall School. She attended the Furman University and Vanderbilt University.
Grant began performing with her guitar at devotional meetings at the Harpeth Hall School. In 1976, she wrote her first song "Mountain Top". While working as an intern at a recording studio, she made a tape of her songs for her parents that was heard by producer Brown Bannister, who in turn played it for gospel singer Chris Christian, the owner of the recording studio, who called it Word Records. Chris Christian offered her a recording contract, while she was still in her mid-teens.
In 1977, she recorded her first album "Amy Grant" which was released on Word's Myrrh Records. Then in 1978, Amy began performing concerts around the country. Her second album "My Father's Eyes" was released in April 1979. At that time she attempted to combine her musical career with studying. In mid-1979 Grant toured together with Gary Chapman, who had written the title track and would become her first husband.
Amy`s third album "Never Alone", 1980, featured songs mostly written by some combination of her, Chris Christian, Bannister and Chapman. Then in 1981, she released two albums "In Concert" and "In Concert Volume Two". Her fourth studio album "Age to Age", 1982 made Grant a superstar within the gospel field. In the mid-1980s, she began touring and recording with songwriter Michael W. Smith. Also during the 1980s, Grant was also a backup singer for Bill Gaither.
Her fifth studio album "Straight Ahead" was released in February 1984. In the spring of 1984, Amy starred with Paul Williams and Tom Wopat in an hourlong TV special called "Story, Songs and Stars" that was based on the Cinderella story. Then she released the albums, including "Unguarded", 1985 and "Lead Me On", 1988 which contained many songs that were about Christianity and love relationships.
Also she had the opportunity to work with other artists, including former Chicago singer Peter Cetera, actor Kevin Costner and singer Bryan White. Amy`s song "Baby Baby", about her daughter, from the eighth album "Heart in Motion", 1991, became a pop hit. It was followed by four more Top 40 hits, each accompanied by a music video, the first three of which also reached the Top Ten - "Every Heartbeat," "That's What Love Is For," "Good for Me" and "I Will Remember You."
Grant toured North America and Europe from July 1991 to March 1992. Her album "House of Love", 1994 included catchy pop songs mingled with spiritual lyrics. In February 1996, Amy was featured on the soundtrack for the film Mr. Wrong, singing the 1976 10cc hit "The Things We Do for Love," which reached the adult contemporary chart. She spent 1996 and much of 1997 working on her tenth regular studio album "Behind the Eyes", which was released in September 1997.
In May 2002, she released the eleventh studio album "Legacy...Hymns & Faith", which featured a Vince Gill-influenced mix of bluegrass and pop and marked Grant's 25th anniversary in the music industry. In addition to her singing career, she was a host for a show "Three Wishes", in which she and a team of helpers make wishes come true for small-town residents. But the show lasted only one season. Also she is the author of such books as "Amy Grant's Heart to Heart Bible Stories", 1985 and "Mosaic: Pieces of My Life So Far", 2007.
On September 26, 2006, Grant released "Time Again...Amy Grant Live" as both a CD and a DVD. In the spring of 2007, she announced that she was ending her association with Word Records, which dated back to October 1976. After that, Amy contracted with EMI CMG who re-released her regular studio albums as remastered versions on August 14, 2007.
Also she released the famous albums such as "Somewhere Down the Road", 2010, "How Mercy Looks from Here", 2013, "In Motion: The Remixes", 2014, "Be Still and Know... Hymns & Faith", 2015 and "Tennessee Christmas", 2016. In February 2017, she released a new song, "Say It With A Kiss", with accompanying video.
Grant received 25 Dove Awards throughout her career. She was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006 and the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 2003.
Amy was nominated for Grammy Awards for Album of the Year "Heart in Motion" in 1992, for Pop Performance Female "Baby Baby" in 1992, for Best Gospel Song "Better Than a Hallelujah" in 2011 and for Best Country Song "Threaten Me with Heaven" in 2012. She received ASCAP Voice of America award in 1996 and American Music Award nomination in 1992.

On June 19, 1982 Amy Grant married Gary Chapman, with whom she divorced in March 1999. They have a son and two daughters. Then on March 10, 2000 he married Vince Gill. They have a daughter, Corrina Grant Gill.
