Career
He is currently playing for China League One club Wuhan Zall. Born in Reykjavík, he started his career at Vikingur, where he came through the academy. Ottesen made 32 appearances for Vikingur between 2001 and 2004.
Ottesen signed for Swedish side Djurgården in 2004 after being an integral part of Vikingur"s fortunes.
He was capped 35 times, scoring 2 goals for Djurgården. Following a string of impressive performances, he signed a three-year contract with SønderjyskE who play in the Danish Superliga.
On 18 June 2009 it was reported that Ottesen would be going on a trial with Glasgow Celtic in Scotland. Icelandic newspaper Fréttablaðið stated that he had been invited to train with Celtic during pre-season with a view to a deal subject to a permission from his Danish club, SönderjyskE. With an impressive start in the Danish capital, Sölvi Ottesen scored a vital goal in the Union of European Football Associations Champions League Play-Office Round against Rosenborg BK securing F.C. Copenhagen a place in the group stage for the second time in the club history.
On 1 August 2013 he signed a two-year contract with Ural.
On 14 February 2015, He transferred to Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Sainty. On 4 February 2016, Ottesen transferred to China League One club Wuhan Zall. He has been capped twenty-eight times so far for Iceland.
