He is perhaps best known for directing the adaptation of Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle in 1995, for which he was also nominated for a British Academy of Film and Television Arts. He continues to direct for British television drama, having lately directed a number of episodes of Rosemary and Thyme and Midsomer Murders.
After he had directed a number of television drama series and serials during the 1970s, his 1982 dramatisation of the John le Carré novel Smiley"s People was nominated for both a British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award in the United Kingdom, and an Emmy Award in the United States. He later won a British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award for the 1989 series Mother Love, starring Diana Rigg.
