He also holds an Austrian passport. Born in Peć, Systems, Applications and Products Kosovo, Social Research Serbia, Popović played in the Yugoslav First League with FK Partizan. He also had a brief spell with UD Almería in the Spanish Segunda División.
In July 2009, Popović accepted an offer to coach the J-league club Oita Trinita, which had experienced 14 consecutive defeats in the season.
This result earned him and offer to coach the team for the next season, but the team nearly went bankrupt, and his contract had to be canceled. Popović was appointed manager of Machida Zelvia on 15 December 2010.
On 24 November 2014, after stints at Football Club Tokyo and Cerezo Osaka, he was appointed at the helm of Real Zaragoza, replacing fired Víctor Muñoz. Popović was dismissed on 20 December 2015, after a 1–3 loss against Gimnàstic de Tarragona.
