(Everyday, modern citizens are bombarded with hundreds of ...)
Everyday, modern citizens are bombarded with hundreds of new and unfamiliar words, exposed to them in difficult and unfamiliar places and circumstances. We have come to a bizarre situation in this society when parents complain that their children learn more vocabulary in public toilets than they do at home or at school. Fortunately, help is in your hands. Those important new words your friends have been talking about are all here. There is no need to twist a dime into a lock or sit in some grubby train station stall to learn what is on everyone’s lips. The words gathered in these pages can be found nowhere else. So welcome to life’s greatest adventure, the lasting joy of "wurds."

Collegiate English Handbook offers several important advantages. It is a teaching handbook. Each chapter is written in clear language with detailed explanations. Francis L. Fennel discusses writing, with an emphasis on understanding the process or writing-how owe does it, not how one corrects it. If certain linguistic patterns must be changed, as at times they must, the emphasis is on understanding why mistakes are made and what can be done about them. The author gave this book both a logical structure and clear transitions. This handbook can be assigned to a class the same way as other textbooks working from the first chapter to the last, for example, using the exercises to strengthen the students' mastery of each skill.

Geary explores the first assassination of one of our presidents in the hands of an obsessive-compulsive stalker, a deluded loser who thought his action would bring him national glory. (This is the true story about the most interesting person ...)
This is the true story about the most interesting person you've never heard of: Arthur Cravan, a major figure in pre-WWI cutting-edge art circles, was among the greatest mysterious figures of the twentieth century. A self-confessed thief, forger, and con-artist, he used a roster of assumed names and false identities. He was known, at various times, as a novelist, poet, painter, art critic, lecturer, publisher, and the lightweight boxing champion of France. Always a rebellious, restless spirit, this dedicated rule-breaker was a political radical whose friendship with Leon Trotsky earned him the surveillance of the United States government - even though his immigration to Mexico with his wife, the poet Mina Loy. In 1918, at the age of thirty-one, the fascinating physical giant vanished without a trace, and - despite several supposed sightings over the years - was never seen again. Is it possible that he became the mysterious, reclusive novelist B. Traven, who wrote The Treasure of the Sierra Madre?

(Trotsky was a hero to some, a ruthless demon to others. T...)
Trotsky was a hero to some, a ruthless demon to others. To Stalin, he was such a threat that he warranted murder by a pickax. This polarizing figure set up a world conflict that lasted through the twentieth century, and in Trotsky: A Graphic Biography, the renowned comic artist Rick Geary uses his distinct style to depict the stark reality of the man and his times. Trotsky's life becomes a guide to the creation of the Soviet Union, the horrors of World War I, and the establishment of international communism as he, Lenin, and their fellow Bolsheviks rise from persecution and life underground to the height of political power. Ranging from his boyhood in Ukraine to his fallout with Stalin and his moonlight romance with Frida Kahlo, Trotsky is a stunning look at one of the twentieth century's most important thinkers and the far-reaching political trends that he launched.

(The perfect ingredients for a juicy scandal and fascinati...)
The perfect ingredients for a juicy scandal and fascinating investigation are presented in this masterful graphic novel retelling of an unsolved murder from the 1920s. On the evening of September 14, 1922, Reverend Edward Hall and Mrs. Eleanor Mills take a stroll in the New Brunswick town park. Shots are heard and two days later their bodies are found lying neatly next to each other, love letters strewn around them, and a scarf obscures the fact that Mrs. Mills’ throat has been slit. The two had been involved in an affair and the press hungrily devours the story. No evidence is sufficient to lead to an indictment, so the mystery intensifies with conjecture: Was this a dual suicide? Was this perpetrated by a jealous rival? Four years later the case reopens due to new evidence indicting the reverend’s wife, but she is an upstanding member of the community who vehemently denies that her husband ever had an affair.

(This true-crime graphic novel tells the story of one of t...)
This true-crime graphic novel tells the story of one of the most scandalous murders of the times. Stanford White was one of New York’s most famous architects, having designed many mansions and the first Madison Square Garden; his influence on New York’s look at the turn of the century was pervasive. As he became popular and in demand, he also became quite self-indulgent: he had a taste for budding young showgirls on Broadway, even setting up a private apartment to entertain them in, including a room with a red velvet swing. When he met Evelyn Nesbit, an exquisite young nymph, cover girl, showgirl, inspiration for Charles Dana Gibson’s drawing The Eternal Question and later for the movie The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing, he knew he was on to something special. However, Evelyn eventually married a young Pittsburgh decadent heir with a dark side who developed a deep hatred for White and what he may or may not have done to her.

(One of the great folk legends of the Wild West, William H...)
One of the great folk legends of the Wild West, William H. Bonney went from cowboy and rancher's gunslinger to a pure outlaw, forever dodging justice in New Mexico before it was even a state. On the one hand, he was charming, fun-loving, often present at social events, quite appealing to the ladies. Also conversant in Spanish, "Billito" was popular with the Spanish speaking crowd. On the other hand, he had no compunction to coldly kill a man, a sheriff, a deputy - anyone who got in the way of his rustling cattle or horses for an illicit living. He also proved hard to keep in jail once he was caught. It is probably his daring escapes from jails that made him most famous, and this is the main subject of this biography, which traces his story up through his death by a gunshot in the pitch darkness, fired by lawmen obsessed with getting rid of him.

Rick Geary was born on February 25, 1946, in Kansas City, Missouri, and grew up in Wichita, Kansas. He is the son of Edward V. Geary, a banker, and Helen Louise (Brooks) Geary, a homemaker.
Rick Geary attended the University of Kansas, Lawrence, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1968 and a Master of Arts in 1971.
Rick Geary worked as a staff artist for two weekly papers in Wichita, Kansas before moving to San Diego in 1975, where he served as a regular contributor of illustrations to periodicals, including San Diego Reader (1975). He got involved with the Comic Convention, the 1976 Comic-Con was his first, and then he made connections with other artists and publishers and got into doing what is called independent comics. Geary began work in comics in 1977 and was for thirteen years a contributor to the Funny Pages of National Lampoon (1979-1992), as well as to Copley News Service (1985-1997). His comic stories have also been published in Heavy Metal, Dark Horse Comics, and the DC Comics, Paradox Press Big Books. His early comic work has been collected in Housebound with Rick Geary from Fantagraphics Books. During a four-year stay in New York, his illustrations appeared regularly in The New York Times Book Review (1988-1992). Rick's illustration work has also been seen in MAD (1996-2000), Spy, Computoredge, Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times, The Old Farmer's Almanac, San Diego Union-Tribune, Pulse, Wood and Steel, and American Libraries.
Geary has also self-published many of his books, often using KickStarter, the online funding site for creative projects, to offset publishing costs. Rick has written and illustrated three children's books based on The Mask for Dark Horse and two Spider-Man children's books for Marvel. His children's comic Society of Horrors ran in Disney Adventures magazine. In 2006, Geary was asked to illustrate a new series of Gumby comics to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ever-smiling green slab of clay character created by Art Clokey. The book created with Bob Burden who wrote the story and Steve Oliff and Lance Borde as colorists won the 2007 Eisner Comic Industry Award for Best Publication for a Younger Audience. His graphic novels include three adaptations for the Classics Illustrated and the nine-volume series A Treasury of Victorian Murder for NBM Publishing. The new series A Treasury of 20th Century Murder began in 2008 with The Lindbergh Child. His other historically-based graphic novels include Cravan, written with Mike Richardson, and J. Edgar Hoover: A Graphic Biography. In 2016 he finished his book on the Black Dahlia, one in a series of famous murder cases that now totals 16 volumes. Geary and his wife, Deborah, moved to Carrizozo in the early 2000s. They bought a historic home built in 1910 and set up a shop. In 2014 Geary was reunited at Comic-Con with director Guillermo del Toro, who has collected Geary's works for years. Writer and director of the Hellboy series of movies as well as Cronos, and Mimic, del Toro's works often deal with graphic novel subjects and treatments. Today, Geary is one of about 20 Carrizozo artists who make their living as artists or, in Geary’s case, a graphic novelist.

Rick Geary prefers to work by hand, eschewing computer drawing and layout programs. As he said: "I'm more of a 20th-century person." Geary works with pen and ink and sometimes uses watercolor washes.
Quotes from others about the person
"Today when people talk about mainstream comics, they tend to talk about superheroes, sci-fi fantasy, and elves and goblins but what drew me into the alternative comics is that it deals with real people and everyday life."
"Keep working. You have to love what you do, but if you love it enough, keep working. If at first, you don't get a very good response, keep showing it to other people. I always like to think that if no one else will publish you, publish yourself. It is easier to do today than ever before."
Rick Geary has been married to Deborah Lee Chester since January 11, 1987.
