Background
Zbigniew Wladyslaw Landau was born on January 18, 1931 in Warsaw, Poland. He was the son of Wladyslaw Landau and Irena (Helfgot) Landau.
In the years 1949–1955 Zbigniew studied at the Financial Planning Department of the Central School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw (nowadays Warsaw School of Economics).

In the years 1949–1955 Zbigniew studied at the Financial Planning Department of the Central School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw (nowadays Warsaw School of Economics). He wrote a doctoral dissertation under the title "Foreign loans of the Polish state 1918-1926", the defense took place on May 19, 1960. In 1964 Landau achieved habilitation.
Landau taught history of economics at Central School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw (nowadays SGH Warsaw School of Economics) and at Wyższa Szkoła Nauk Społecznych przy KC PZPR. In 1965-1970 he was the head of the department at SGH, and in 1966-1967 the director of the SGH Library. From 1975 to 1978, Zbigniew was deputy dean at the Department of Economics and Social Affairs, and from 1978, deputy director of the Institute of Political Economics.
Landau also served as a financial history adviser to the Institute of Finance under the Ministry of Finance. In 1974, he began searching for silver, the property of the pre-war National Defense Fund, which was exported from Poland in 1939 and was considered lost.
On July 10, 1980 he was awarded the title of professor of economic sciences.
From October 1, 1987, Zbigniew was the head of the Department of Economic and Social History at the Warsaw School of Economics and in 1993 he was appointed as Chairman of the SGH Library Council.
Landau has devoted much of his career to understanding the dynamics of the relationship of economics to politics. He collaborated with Jerzy Tomaszewski on a number of works, including Zarys historii gospodarczej Polski, 1918-1939, Kapitally oce w Polsce, Gospodark Polski miedzywojennej 1918-1939, and The Polish Economy in the Twentieth Century.
The subject of Zbigniew's special interests was the economic history of interwar Poland: foreign capital issues, in particular, foreign loans to the Polish state, the course of the great economic crisis in 1930–1935, assessment of the economy of interwar Poland and publication of sources.
Zbigniew Landau was a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Polish History Association, Stowarzyszenie Autorow (Association of Authors), Union of Polish Youth and Organizacja Młodzieży Towarzystwa Uniwersytetu Robotniczego.
Zbigniew Landau married Irena Barska on March 17, 1955. They had one child - Anna Landau-Czajka.
