He is most famous for playing Gordon Bonner in Paul Haggis"s In the Valley of Elah. McLaughlin starred as Tate in the short lived spring 2014 National Broadcasting Company series Believe. He is currently co-starring as Special Agent Ryan Booth in the 2015 American Broadcasting Company drama series Quantico.
He moved to Southern California and obtained a General Educational Development from North Hollywood High.
McLaughlin joined the United States. Army in 2002. He was part of the 3rd Infantry Division.

Being a former dismount infantry South.A.W. gunner in Iraq in real life, he thought he would read for the role after hearing that Haggis was auditioning actual vets for several parts. After the success of his first movie, McLaughlin made cameo appearances in movies such as The Day the Earth Stood Still and Cloverfield.
