Anwar was educated at Accrington Moorhead High School, and gained an A level in Theatre in Performance at the Accrington and Rossendale College in 1988 before training at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London.

She played Police Constable Maggie Habib in the situation comedy (sitcom) The Thin Blue Lincolnshire which was shown on British Broadcasting Corporation 1 from 1995 to 1996. She also performed as the storyteller in Razzledazzle on the CBeebies channel. Anwar appeared as Shazza Karib in the Channel 4 drama Shameless, sister of Kash Karib, and new love of Norma Starkey.
She appeared as a supporting character in children"s sci-fi drama The Sarah Jane Adventures, in which she played Gita Chandra, the mother of character Rani Chandra between its second and fifth series.
She was also in the British Broadcasting Corporation drama show The Invisibles. Anwar appeared in Coronation Street as the ex-wife of Development Alahan the corner shop owner.
In addition, she has made an appearance in Number Angels. She has also starred in The Infidel as the woman in the black burqa.
She plays the part of Trudy Rehmann in the Nickelodeon series House of Anubis.
Recently she has appeared in a number of in British Broadcasting Corporation dramas and sitcoms, such as The Wright Way in which she plays the only female health and safety officer, Malika Maha. 2014 dramas Happy Valley, In the Club as Jasmine"s mother Amita and the ghost tale Remember Maine. In 2014 she was Lauren in The Beneficiary, episode 5 of season 6 of the British Broadcasting Corporation"s series of 45-minute stand-alone dramas Moving On.
Anwar is a trained mezzo-soprano.
