He has been a delegate of the Essonne"s 8th constituency since 1997 and mayor of Yerres, Essonne since 1995. He intended to run for the, but withdrew his candidacy on 16 March 2007 after failing to gather the necessary 500 signatures of elected officials. In November 2010, he announced his intention to run for the and in March 2012 he announced that he had obtained the necessary 500 signatures to run as an official candidate.
Dupont-Aignan strongly advocates leaving the euro, calling it a "racket", and proposes returning to the franc and retaining the Euro only as a reserve currency.
He received 644,043 votes in the first ballot, or 1.79% of the votes cast, finishing seventh. His best showing (2488%) was in Yerres, of which he is mayor.
He is a co-president of the European political party EUDemocrats - Alliance for a Europe of Democracies.
