Dickson was educated at Barnard Castle School where he learnt his rugby.

His first club was Newcastle Falcons where he made his debut for first team in the 2004/5 season. In 2008, he joined newly promoted Northampton Saints for the 2008/9 season. In 2008, Dickson played for England Saxons in the side that defeated Ireland A. He was also called up to the England squad for the 2008 Six Nations Championship.
He played great for the remaining six nations games in particular against France.
After the 6 nations, Stuart Lancaster was rewarded with the manager job on full-time basis. Dickson was named as the captain for the 2015-2016 season at Northampton Saints, replacing Dylan Hartley.
