Martin Disler was born on March 1, 1949 in Seewen, Switzerland to a family of gardeners.
He was expelled from school in 1968 for disciplinary reasons.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Disler worked extensively in Europe and in the USA, gaining international attention alongside artists such as Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente and Georg Baselitz.
Deeply psychological, Disler’s expressionistic compositions are particularly suggestive of the human figure, as they convey scenes of social, political, and personal turmoil. Disler achieved such pictures through the employment of stark black as well as bright, intense colors, applied with quick, lively brushstrokes.
He died on August 27, 1996 in Geneva, Switzerland.
