O Cabeleira é um romance de transição. Publicado em 1876, centra-se na história de um criminoso de Pernambuco e região, José Gomes, de alcunha Cabeleira, antecessor de Lampião. Ao longo do enredo, o autor se vale das trovas transmitidas geração a geração, como se fossem a "linha condutora" da narrativa. Além de valorizar a região e a cultura popular nordestina, eternizando a figura do Cabeleira, os episódios são recriados pelo narrador, originando um verdadeiro panorama histórico e social do Nordeste. Considerado um "romance de espantar", sua importância não é apenas literária, mas também histórica.

He wrote under the pen names Semprônio and Farisvest. He is patron of the 14th chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. João Franklin da Silveira Távora was born in the city of Baturité, Ceará, to Camilo Henrique da Silveira Távora and Maria de Santana da Silveira.
He made his primary studies in Fortaleza.
In 1874, he moves to Rio de Janeiro, writing for journals A Consciência Livre and A Verdade. Along with Nicolau Midosi, he founded the Revista Brasileira, which lasted from 1879 to 1881.
He died on August 18, 1888.
