This Third Edition of the popular text, while retaining nearly all the material of the previous edition, incorporates material on important new developments in lasers and quantum electronics. Covers phase-conjugate optics and its myriad applications, the long wavelength quaternary semiconductor laser, and our deepened understanding of the physics of semiconductor lasers--especially that applying to their current modulations and limiting bandwidth, laser arrays and the related concept of supermodes, quantum well semiconductor lasers, the role of phase amplitude coupling in laser noise, and free-electron lasers. In addition, the chapters on laser noise and third-order nonlinear effects have been extensively revised.

Yariv, Amnon was born on April 13, 1930 in Tel Aviv, Israel. Arrived in the United States, 1951, naturalized, 1964. Son of Shraga and Henya (Davidson) Yariv.
Bachelor of Science, University of California, Berkeley, 1954; Master of Science, University of California, Berkeley, 1956; Doctor of Philosophy, University of California, Berkeley, 1958.
In 1985 he was awarded the Harold Pender Award by the University of Pennsylvania. In 1992 he was awarded the Harvey Prize by the Technion in Haifa, Israel, for "Pioneering contributions to opto-electronics, wave propagation in crystals and nonlinear and phase conjugate optics, and his demonstration of semiconductor-based integrated optics technology leading to the development of high-speed and stable solid state lasers."
Yariv has authored several texts on optical electronics and photonics. He has said that the highlight of his group"s work was the invention of the semiconductor distributed feedback laser, a device widely used in the Internet"s fiber-optic communications.
Amnon Yariv currently resides in Pasadena, California.
He has three daughters. Danielle Yariv, Dana Yariv and Gabriela (Gavi) Yariv.
