He became an aviator. In 1932, whilst attempting a round-the world flight in a Junkers seaplane, he and his co-pilot became lost in the remote coast of northern Australia. Their rescue was the subject of world-wide media coverage.
In 1934, Bertram joined the Nazi Party and the Société Anonyme, and his first work in film was in making propaganda.
During World World War II his Messerschmidt plane was shot down over Libya. He was taken as a prisoner of war and sent to Australia in 1941.
He had a successful career in film and wrote ten films between 1938 and 1985. He also directed six films between 1939 and 1952.
Personal life Death He died on 8 January 1993 in Munich, Germany.
