Could anything possibly be more fun than a pig parade!? You wouldn't think so. But you'd be wrong. A pig parade is a terrible idea. Pigs hate to march, refuse to wear the uniforms, don't care about floats, and insist on playing country music ballads. Those are just some of the reasons. And trust me, this hysterical book has plenty more!

( It looked for a while as if Michael Collins would spend...)
It looked for a while as if Michael Collins would spend his life breaking concrete and throwing rocks for the Vittorio Scalese Construction Company. He liked the work and he liked the pay. But a chance remark by one of his coworkers made him realize that he wanted to involve himself in something bigger, something more meaningful than crushing rocks and drinking beer. In his acclaimed first memoir, Hot Lights, Cold Steel, Collins wrote passionately about his four-year surgical residency at the prestigious Mayo Clinic. Blue Collar, Blue Scrubs turns back the clock, taking readers from his days as a construction worker to his entry into medical school, expertly infusing his journey to become a doctor with humanity, compassion, and humor. From the first time he delivers a baby to being surrounded by death and pain on a daily basis, Collins compellingly writes about how medicine makes him confront, in a very deep and personal way, the nature of God and suffering--and how delicate life can be.

( A LOVING FATHER A typical morning in the Atlanta suburb...)
A LOVING FATHER A typical morning in the Atlanta suburbs: Businessman Rusty Sneiderman drops his beloved son off at the Dunwoody Prep nursery. In the parking lot, a minivan pulls up next to his car. The driver pulls out a gun-and shoots Rusty four times in the chest. A HEARTBROKEN WIFE Sneiderman's devoted wife, Andrea, is devastated by the crime. Who could have done this? She is shocked when police trace the shooting to a man named Hemy Neuman-who happens to be Andrea's adoring boss. A DEADLY OBSESSION The prosecution accuses Andrea and Hemy of having a "forbidden relationship," and of conspiring to collect $2 million in her husband's life insurance. But Andrea swears she never intended to kill Rusty-and that it is Hemy who's "delusional" and obsessed. With the charges against her dropped, and the insurance money frozen, Andrea remains a mysterious character. Only one other person-the man who pulled the trigger-knows the truth about what really happened... With 8 pages of dramatic photos!

(Stealing Qubits contains two novellas and two short stori...)
Stealing Qubits contains two novellas and two short stories. The novellas are: The Big Eighties, a coming of age story in rural America, and Stealing Qubits, a spy story set in Montreal with a flashback subplot where the hero was a narcotics agent at Cornell. The two short stories are: Soft Police, a chilling science fiction depiction of a grim future where ethanol displaces food crops and environmental concerns trump human need, and The Great War, an apocalyptic post-9/11 vision of a world at war. These stories are at times exciting, sad, frightening, and funny. Reading this book will both entertain you and make you think.

( When Hurricane Katrina tore through New Orleans and the...)
When Hurricane Katrina tore through New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, hundreds of thousands were left behind to suffer the ravages of destruction, disease, and even death. The majority of these people were black; nearly all were poor. The Federal government’s slow response to local appeals for help is by now notorious. Yet despite the cries of outrage that have mounted since the levees broke, we have failed to confront the disaster’s true lesson: to be poor, or black, in today’s ownership society, is to be left behind. Displaying the intellectual rigor, political passion, and personal empathy that have won him acclaim and fans all across the color line, Michael Eric Dyson offers a searing assessment of the meaning of Hurricane Katrina. Combining interviews with survivors of the disaster with his deep knowledge of black migrations and government policy over decades, Dyson provides the historical context that has been sorely missing from public conversation. He explores the legacy of black suffering in America since slavery and ties its psychic scars to today’s crisis. And, finally, his critique of the way black people are framed in the national consciousness will shock and surprise even the most politically savvy reader. With this clarion call Dyson warns us that we can only find redemption as a society if we acknowledge that Katrina was more than an engineering or emergency response failure. From the TV newsroom to the Capitol Building to the backyard, we must change the way we relate to the black and the poor among us. What’s at stake is no less than the future of democracy.

(On a Saturday morning at the end of November 2008, a youn...)
On a Saturday morning at the end of November 2008, a young family suffered the loss of two sons and the permanent paralysis of another as a result of an automobile accident. Rather than tear the family apart, the tragedy drew them closer and touched the hearts of people in and out of their Catholic community. The boys' father began writing to express the painful emotions he felt and the faith that...

(On July 20, 1994, Dan Laguna and Carlos Guerrero of the 1...)
On July 20, 1994, Dan Laguna and Carlos Guerrero of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment SOAR were in a devastating helicopter accident. Carlos died and Dan spent months in the hospital recovering from 3rd and 4th degree full thickness burns and several broken bones. His story of survival is miraculous, inspirational and motivating. He returned to duty a year later and served seven more years in his unit before retiring. After retiring from the Army and moving to Utah, Dan took a job working as a contractor for Blackwater USA in 2004. On January 23, 2007 his brother, Art Laguna, and four of his brothers in arms were killed when their helicopter was shot down over Baghdad, Iraq. Dan Laguna's helicopter had extensive damage due to small arms fire and was forced to land but after inspecting the helicopter and noticing dozens of insurgents racing toward them, he decided to take the risk and fly back to the Green Zone. This book is a tribute to his fallen brothers whose, courage, bravery, and patriotism are what make this country what it is today.
