Anna Chao Pai was born on January 27, 1935 in Beijing, China; the daughter of Shih Hui Chao and Huai Tung (Chang) Chao. Her parents immigrated to the United States in 1940.
Pai received a Bachelor of Arts degree in zoology from Sweet Briar College in 1957. Two years later she earned her Master of Arts degree in embryology from Bryn Mawr College. Also in 1964, Anna was given a Ph.D. in developmental genetics from the Sue Golding Graduate Division of Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Pai worked part-time as a waitress and played on four varsity sports teams. She began her career as a teacher at Moravian Seminary for Girls (nowadays Moravian Academy) in 1959 and held the position for a year. In 1964, she became an instructor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she worked until 1965.
In 1969, Anna became an assistant professor of biology at Montclair State University. In 1978, she was appointed an associate professor at that university. Also, Pai served as a professor of biology at Montclair State University from 1985 to 1997. In 1997 she became a professor emerita at the same university. She also was responsible for the development of a College Honors Program at the same university. In 2009, Pai authored a science fiction novel "Choices" about genetic engineering under the pseudonym, A.C. White.

2019Pai is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Institute of Biological Sciences, National Association of Biology Teachers, New Jersey Academy of Sciences, American Women in Science, Northern New Jersey Sweet Briar Alumni Club, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.
On August 29, 1959 Anna Pai married David H. Pai. They have two children.
