During his time in Stuttgart, he already attended the lectures of Hermann von Fehling at the University of Stuttgart. Later, he studied pharmacy at the University of Tübingen. He passed his first exam in 1870 and received his Doctor of Philosophy in 1872 for work with Felix Hoppe-Seyler.
