Strayer attended Carnegie Technical and then the Pennsylvania Military Academy.
He was active from the mid-1920s until the early 1950s. After graduation, he served in the Navy during World War I. After the War, he found work at Metro Studios, which would later become known as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. While there, he worked as an assistant director and also acted in a few films. During the 1920s, he moved on to Columbia Pictures.
While there, he became a successful writer, director and producer.
