Career
Maloney was formerly an Australian football (soccer) player who played for several National Soccer League clubs, including Marconi Fairfield, Perth Glory and Newcastle Breakers. In season 1999/2000, it was Maloney"s growing reputation as the most prolific goalscoring midfielder in the league that prompted the then Chairman of Perth Glory, Nick Tana, to pay an Australian record domestic transfer fee to secure his services from Marconi. This transfer still stands as an Australian record today.
Maloney represented the Australian under 20"s which finished fourth at the 1991 Fédération internationale de football association World Youth Championship in Portugal where he played all six games and scored the winning goal against tournament favourites Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics to secure a 1-0 victory.
He also competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Spain for the Australian Under 23"s team which finished fourth. He made several Socceroos appearances between 1998 and 2000.
He was an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder. Maloney retired from professional football in March 2006 and was immediately appointed as the assistant coach of the New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) elite football program
In June 2011 Maloney was confirmed as the head coach of the Australian National under 16 Maccabiah football team who competed at the 19th Maccabiah Games, Israel 2013.
By mid 2014 Maloney was officially appointed as the assistant coach to Dato Ong Kim Swee for the Malaysian National under 23 team who competed at the XVII Asiad, Incheon Asian Games in September 2014.
