Background
Streeter was born in London and educated at The Queen"s College, Oxford.
(B. H. Streeter (1874-1937) was an Oxford theologian and b...)
B. H. Streeter (1874-1937) was an Oxford theologian and biblical scholar. From 1915 to 1934 he was a canon of Hereford Cathedral, which is famous for its medieval chained library. Books were rare and precious items in the middle ages, and were frequently chained to the bookshelf and read on the lectern below to prevent unauthorised removal. Streeter's researches during the Hereford library's restoration led to the publication in 1931 of this illustrated study of early English libraries. It examines in detail the arrangement of libraries from medieval times to the eighteenth century, focusing on cathedral, college and parish libraries in England. Examining their floor plans, the form of their desks, shelves and seating arrangement, Streeter identifies distinct variations in design. Libraries are working buildings, and alter over time with the needs of their users, but Streeter's wide-ranging expertise allows him to reconstruct their earlier configurations.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Between the Mystics of any past age and ourselves there i...)
Between the Mystics of any past age and ourselves there is, quite apart from the problem of the mystic consciousness itself, a barrier of time and circumstance which no effort of the historic imagination can completely penetrate. In this book we attempt a study of a Mystic, with the unique advantage that he is a contemporary of our own. He is also one of those Mystics who appeals to the present age because it is precisely his consciousness of communion with the Divine that impels him to a life of unselfish activity and the practical service of mankind. Sadhu Sundar Singh the Sadhu as he is popularly called lives in this twentieth century a life which, so far as external conditions are concerned, resembles that of St. Francis of A ssisi. His inward experience recalls rather, in some ways, St. Paul, in others Mother Juliana, while in others it is individual to himself. I f, however, we venture thus to speak of him and them together, it is not by way of asserting a comparison of greatness; it is merely to indicate an identity of type. Whether Sundar Singh is a great man in the sense in which History employs that term, History alone can decide. In that sense no man can be pronounced great till his career is ended, nor even then by his own contemporaries. But while we do not suggest that the Sadhu is on the same plane with St. Francis or St. Paul, we feel that, from having known him, we understand them better. The Sadhu is no metaphysician, no scientist, no higher critic. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Streeter was born in London and educated at The Queen"s College, Oxford.
He attended the 1935 Nuremberg Rally.
In 1910, Streeter formed a group of Oxford dons known as The Group, which met weekly to discuss theological topics. He wrote a dozen volumes in the fields of philosophy of religion, comparative religion, and New Testament textual studies. He was Dean Ireland"s Professor of the Exegesis of Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford from 1932 to 1933, when he became Provost of Queen"s College.
The most important work of Streeter was The Four Gospels: A Study of Origins (1924), in which he proposed a "four document hypothesis" (instead "two-source hypothesis") as a new solution to the synoptic problem.
In this work, he also developed the theory of "local texts" in the manuscript transmission of the New Testament (pp 27–50). Johann Leonhard Hug was his forerunner.
Streeter found a new textual family: Caesarean text-type. He remarked a close textual relationship between Codex Sinaiticus and Vulgate of Jerome.
The crew started the descent to Basel in low visibility due to foggy conditions.
The plane hit Mount Kelleköpfli located near Waldenburg, 25 kilometers southeast from the Basel airport. The pilot Walter Eberschweiler and the Streeters were killed immediately, while the radio operator/navigator Hans Huggler survived the accident, but was severely wounded.
