He was chairman of the board of Corning Glass s (1941-1961). His father, Alanson B. Houghton, served as a United States Representative from New York, as well as United States. Ambassador to Germany and United States. ambassador to Great Britain. He served on the World Scout Committee of the World Organization of the Scout Movement from 1949-1955.
Houghton received the Silver Buffalo Award in 1945 and served as the National president of the Boy Scouts of America from 1946-1951. He was awarded the Bronze Wolf, the only distinction of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, awarded by the World Scout Committee for exceptional services to world, in 1955.
In 1959 he was elected as an honorary member of the New York Society of the Cincinnati.
