Her film roles include Cadillac Manitoba (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992), Cop Land (1997) and What Dreams May Come (1998). Her parents are Italian American, and her father emigrated from Carunchio, Abruzzo in 1951. Sciorra studied dance as a child, and as she grew older, began taking drama lessons at Hagen-Berghoff Studio and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
On November 5, 1981, Sciorra founded the Brass Ring Theater Company at the age of 21.
She starred in the 1992 thriller The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, and received critical acclaim for her work in Cop Land. She received an Emmy nomination for her role as Gloria Trillo in the Home Box Office series The Sopranos.
From 2005 to 2006, she portrayed Detective Carolyn Barek on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
