Autant le rêve avait été brillant, autant le réveil était pénible. Tout le monde s’était cru riche, même les mendians, et il semblait que tout le monde fût devenu pauvre, même les millionnaires. Personne n’avait su s’arrêter, se modérer. Quelqu’un avait dit au poète Gay, qui gagnait de grosses sommes : « Gardez-vous au moins une chemise blanche et une épaule de mouton pour tous les jours de votre vie ! » Gay n’avait pas écouté ce conseil, la roue de la fortune avait tourné, et le poète se retrouvait aussi gueux que le héros de son fameux opéra. En fumée s’étaient évanouis les bénéfices de la traduction d’Homère, confiés par Pope aux jeux de la hausse et du hasard. En fumée la réputation de lady Mary Montague, la jeune et spirituelle ambassadrice, qu’on accusait d’avoir volé des actions à son ami, Buremonde. Samuel Chandler, le fameux prédicateur puritain, après avoir vu son frère pendu pour faux, ruiné lui-même, était réduit à ouvrir une échoppe de bouquiniste. Aislabie, le chancelier de l’Échiquier, était déshonoré. Le directeur-général des postes, Graggs, fin lettré, ami d’Addison et l’une des plumes élégantes du Spectator, disparaissait de ce monde juste à temps pour éviter la même honte et la léguer à son vieux père, qui en mourut de chagrin. Les maîtresses du roi, vieilles créatures dégoûtantes qu’il avait amenées avec lui du Hanovre et affublées de titres anglais, furent les seules personnes qui, n’ayant point de considération à sauver, ne perdirent rien et gardèrent, par surcroît, quelques épaves de la fortune publique. Certes un tel spectacle était lait pour inspirer à la fois le poète comique, le prédicateur, l’écrivain satirique et le caricaturiste. La caricature naissait à peine ; son nom même n’était pas encore entré dans la langue. Pendant que cette branche de l’art fleurissait et fructifiait en France, en Italie, en Allemagne, et, plus récemment, en Hollande, elle était, faute d’artistes habiles, demeurée stérile en Angleterre, et les contemporains de Swift ignoraient encore un genre pour lequel tout les prédestinait : liberté des mœurs politiques, humour national, penchant pour la satire morale, goût de l’allégorie, et jusqu’à cette joyeuse recherche des laideurs physiques, qui est, chez les races teutoniques et saxonnes, un legs du moyen âge.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. The son of the historian Charles Auguste Désiré Filon, he was born in Paris.
Educated at the École normale, he lectured for some years in the Lycées of Nice and Grenoble. In October 1867, Duruy, then the French minister of education, appointed him tutor to the Prince Imperial. During the Empress"s Regency in 1870, M. Filon acted as her private secretary.
Upon the fall of the Second French Empire, the Prince Imperial was exiled to Chislehurst, Kent, accompanied by Filon, who settled in England with his family.
He also wrote on English subjects, chiefly under the pseudonym of Pierre Sandrié.
