McManus began his career as a writer in the "Time" magazine's World section in 1959. Three years later he took a position of the first common market bureau chief of "Time" magazine in Paris. Then in 1964, Jason was appointed an associate editor and senior editor in 1968 at "Time" magazine in New York. Also he served as an assistant managing editor of the same magazine from 1975 to 1978.
In 1978, McManus became an executive editor and managing editor in 1985 of "Time" magazine. In 1987, he was appointed an editor-in-chief at Time Inc., where he served until 1994. In addition, Jason served on the Council on Foreign Relations.
McManus is a member of Century Association in New York City.
On October 18, 1958 Jason McManus married Patricia Ann Paulson, with whom he divorced in February 1966. They have a child - John Alan McManus. On December 2, 1973 he married Deborah Hall Murphy. They have two children - Sophie Eleanor McManus and Mage Caroline McManus.
