William Kelly

William Kelly was an American inventor. William studied metallurgy at the Western University of Pennsylvania. Instead of getting a job as a scientist, Kelly, his brother, and his brother-in-law started a dry goods and commission business, which they called McShane & Kelly.

Those who surrounded William thought that his scheme was insane, and his father-in-law even had him examined by a doctor.

Major achievements

  • William Kelly is American ironmaster who invented the pneumatic process of steelmaking, in which air is blown through molten pig iron to oxidize and remove unwanted impurities.
