Chien Tien-hao received education in the United States, graduating from the New York State College of Agriculture and Forestry of Cornell University with the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1917 and Master of Science in Agriculture in 1918.
Chien Tien-hao was a professor of Agriculture and concurrently head of Sericulture Department, College of Agriculture and Forestry, Nanjing University from 1918 till 1923. He served as a principal of the Provincial College of Agriculture, Zhejiang, in 1926. Between 1927 and 1928 Mr. Chien took up the post of a section chief in Ministry of Education. He acted as a director of Metropolitan Museum of Natural History, Academia Sinica, director of Bureau of Agriculture and Forestry, Zhejiang and concurrently Commissioner of Agriculture and Mining, Zhejiang Provincial Government, from 1929 to 1933. Since 1933 Mr. Chien held the position of a Vice-Director of National Agricultural Research Bureau, Ministry of Industry.
