(Renowned for his intimate scenes of domestic life, Edouar...)
Renowned for his intimate scenes of domestic life, Edouard Villard (1868-1940) was one of the great Post-Impressionist artists, yet relatively little has been published about him. This copiously illustrated book covers all of Vuillard's work and explores his association with a number of important stylistic movements, such as the Nabis, Synthetism, and Symbolism. Extracts from his early journals, and letters between the artist and his contemporaries, such as Pierre Bonnard and Maurice Denis, complete this authoritative study, which will be of great interest and lasting appeal to all fans of Post-Impressionist painting.

(This lavishly illustrated volume examines the genius of P...)
This lavishly illustrated volume examines the genius of Pierre Bonnard, whose utopian vision bridged both Impressionism and modernism. Pierre Bonnard is often considered a painter of idyllic scenes, replete with color and serenity, however, this view overlooks many of the most striking aspects of Bonnard’s oeuvre. Over the course of his career, Bonnard worked within - often expanding and challenging - many genres and techniques. Alternating between the traditions of Impressionism and the abstract visual modes of modernism, Bonnard addressed elements present within many movements in order to synthesize a world worthy of his utopian vision.

Guy Cogeval was born on October 13, 1955, in Paris, France. He is the son of Georges and Rosalba Cogeval.
In 1981 Guy Cogeval received a Master of Arts from Paris-Sorbonne University. In 1985 he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy from this university.
From 1982 to 1984 Guy Cogeval worked for the French Academy in Rome. In 1986 he was a curator at Musée d'Orsay, Paris, and at the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon in 1987. In 1987 and from 1991 to 1992 Cogeval served as a professor at École du Louvre. From 1992 to 1998 he worked as a director of the Musée national des Monuments Français. In 1998 he was appointed a director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. From 2006 to 2008 Cogeval served as a researcher at Institute National d'Histoire de l'Art, Paris.
Cogeval, who has led the Musée d'Orsay since 2008, applied for a third term, but his ability to lead the museum, particularly after suffering a stroke in 2014, has been openly challenged by the museum’s staff. His term ended on March 15, 2017. Cogeval is the director of a research center on Les Nabis, a group of post-Impressionist artists, which will be linked to the museum. Guy Cogeval has directed and curated many illustrious exhibits at various museums in France, winning the medal of honor from the French government in 2001.
His work, Edouard Vuillard, is a comprehensive catalog on the artist. Cogeval had organized Vuillard's exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. D.C. and subsequently the show at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Cogeval is the principal author of Vuillard's catalog.
