Actor comedian director producer author
Garry Shandling was born on November 29, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He was the son of Irving and Muriel Shandling. He was raised in Tucson, Arizona, and had an older brother, Barry, who died of cystic fibrosis in 1960.
Garry Shandling attended Palo Verde High School. He held a Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing from the University of Arizona.
In the early 1970s, Garry Shandling moved to Los Angeles, where he wrote (1975–1976) for the TV series Sanford and Son and Welcome Back, Kotter. Frustrated by the situation comedies’ formulaic writing, he began doing stand-up comedy that featured his whining self-deprecation and self-absorption. Shandling made his television stand-up debut on The Tonight Show in 1981, and by 1983 he was a frequent guest host and considered a possible successor to regular host Johnny Carson.
In 1984, Shandling got a big break of his career with his debut performance as a stand-up special, Garry Shandling: Alone in Vegas. Two years later, he followed it up with a televised special titled, The Garry Shandling Show: 25th Anniversary Special for Showtime. In 1991, a third special titled, Garry Shandling: Stand-Up was a part of the HBO Comedy Hour.
Shandling’s career surged meteorically upwards with It’s Garry Shandling’s Show in 1985, which he co-created with Alan Zweibel. He penned 15 episodes for the series. Highly successful, the show became a huge hit and ran for about 72 episodes on Showtime. The show was a big hit and ran for 89 episodes until 1998 on HBO.
He was also a formidable host, hosting the Grammys in 1990, 1993, and 1994, and the Emmys in 2000 and 2004. Among his film and voice acting appearances were Iron Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Dr. Dolittle, Zoolander, and Over the Hedge. The notorious flop Town and Country, in which he co-starred with Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton, was a big disappointment for Shandling in 2001. He wrote and starred in What Planet Are You From? (2000), but the science-fiction comedy failed to find an audience.

2010Garry Shandling was reluctant to be labeled a Buddhist. His friend, Judd Apatow, said: "I don't know if Garry considered himself a Buddhist, but when you go through his journals, he's writing these reminders to himself and it's like classic Buddhist ideas about, letting go, no mind. And, he'd say the ego desires, desire breeds suffering. And these are classic Buddhist ideas. But they were very important to Garry because he was struggling to figure out a way to be creative and not be an egomaniac and not be obsessed with how people were reacting to him and trying to be successful. So it's interesting because he was this neurotic man who loved talking about the obsession with success. But at the same time, he was constantly saying to himself, none of this matters."
Garry Shandling left $15.2 million to endow medical research programs at the University of California at Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine. He also donated $10,000 (£7,700) to a Haitian runner in the New York City marathon. Shandling left money to Sean Penn’s Haiti charity in his will.
Quotations:
"Without comedy as a defense mechanism, I wouldn't be able to survive."
"I don't like this reality television, I have to be honest; I think real people should not be on television; It's for special people like us, people who have trained and studied to appear to be real."
"Was the Buddha married? His wife would say, "Are you just going to sit around like that all day?"
Garry Shandling was most widely known to be a very private man.
Physical Characteristics: Garry Shandling suffered from hyperparathyroidism.
Quotes from others about the person
"This guy, unbelievable. The most insecure man I've ever met in my life. Has no focus at all. If our director, Tony Drazen, would even say ''Cut'', he'd look at me and say, ''How was I?'' - Sean Penn on Garry Shandling.
From 1987 to 1994 Garry Shandling lived with Linda Doucett. He didn't have his own family and children.
