In late 1870s Edwin was a cattle breeder in Scotland, then worked in forestry in Travancore, India. He became a journalist in 1883 and worked as a staff member at Daily Telegraph, London, United Kingdom until 1908.
From Edwin's father, who made an extensive study of Eastern religion and culture, Edwin L. Arnold obtained a strong interest in the idea of reincarnation and the notion of karma.
Edwin was married to Constance Boyce, but the marriage ended. In 1919 he married Jessie Brighton. He had one daughter from first marriage.
