Hakushu Kitahara attended the English literature department of Waseda University, but he left the university soon after without graduating to work on the staff of two poetry magazines, titled "Bunko" and "Myojo" (1902).
Hakushu Kitahara created a sensation in literary circles with the publication of his first book titled "Jashumon" (1909), and followed it up with another titled "Omoide" (Memories). Had a refreshing style and a good vocabulary. Later together with Miekichi Suzuki edited "Altai Tori" (Red Bird) and did much to popularize books among children.
