Shiki Masaoka was born in 1867 in Matsuyama, Ehime, Japan.
Shiki Masaoka left Tokyo University without graduating to join the editorial staff of Nihon Shimbun newspaper in 1892.
In 1892 Shiki Masaoka made a special study of haiku poetry and originated a new style. Later he joined the army during the Sino-Japanese War but was discharged due to ill health in 1895, and he began editing Hototogisu magazine, a haiku poetry magazine, for which he wrote stories and poems.
