(The present volume, entitled The Viceroy is the first Eng...)
The present volume, entitled The Viceroy is the first English edition of the Hungarian dramatist, Jozsef Katona's (1791-1830) classic tragedy Bank Ban (1819), which has been long regarded as one of the greatest literary achievements of 19th century Hungarian literature. In 1213 in the absence of King Andrew II a group of Hungarian lords plan a murderous attempt against the queen, Gertrude. By using the chronicles of Bonfini and Gaspar Heltai, the author gives not only an overall picture about the medieval Hungarian kingdom, but also draws parallels between 13th and 19th century political conditions. The work is also remarkable for its portrayal of emotional conflict. The tragedy was set to music by Francis Erkel (1810-1893) and has become Hungary's most popular opera.

József Katona was born on November 11, 1791 in Kecskemét, Hungary.
Katona studied philosophy and law and acted on the stage at the University of Pest.
Katona started his career translating German plays. His first original play, Luca Szeke ("Lucius' Chair"), was followed by Jeruzsalem Pusztulasa ("Destruction of Jerusalem") and Rose in 1811. In 1814 he finished Bánk Bán, a tragedy of heroic proportions which was not published until 1821 and which had no immediate success. Its overpoweringly tragical element was not duly appreciated by a public accustomed to polished and graceful literature, and its subject, the murder by the trusted palatine Bánk Bán of Queen Gertrude, wife of King Andrew the Second, caused the censor to forbid production. Katona died April 16, 1830, and no one realized then, or for many years thereafter, that the country had lost in him a great tragic dramatist.
