Seigan Yanagawa was born on July 10, 1789 in Mino, Gifu, Japan.
Seigan Yanagawa founded Gyokuchigin-sha (a society for poets). Later joined Sen-an Kasuga and others and began taking part in national affairs.
In addition to his work as a poet, Seigan was also a well-known Kanshi teacher. Among other things, he taught his cousin Cho Koran, who became his wife in 1821 at the age of seventeen. The couple led a restless travel life before settling in Tokyo in 1832. Here Seigan opened a private school, which enabled both a financially secure life.
His four master students are Mineta Fuko, Onuma Chinzan, Ono Kozan and Toyama Unjo. In his late years, he also taught the poet Miwada Masako. In the 1850s, Seigan and Koran joined a political reform movement and came in opposition to the Bakufu. Seigan escaped arrest only by the fact that he suddenly died of cholera in 1858. Was the most distinguished poet of Chinese style in Japan during his time.
