(This book contains five poems, each written for public pe...)
This book contains five poems, each written for public performance on a special occasion. Traditional forms - mainly the heroic couplet - are used in a new way under a new necessity. A poem on the art of satire is followed by three sermons - for Christmas, Whitsun and the feast of St Thomas More - and the concluding poem is an elegy for T. S. Eliot. Together they complement the more personal poems collected in "Life is a Platform", which is published simultaneously.

'Most of what there is to learn about poetry has to be learnt in one's own language. But it is mostly learnt by reading and turning over poems in one's head, and little by deliberate criticism.' Peter Levi's essay - meditated, as he says in his preface, with passion and written with great excitement - is entertaining, stimulating and controversial. It is not a thesis but a consideration of some important themes which are inter-related.'

(Peter Levi paints a radiant portrait of the Greece he cam...)
Peter Levi paints a radiant portrait of the Greece he came to know through a lifetime of exploration. As a young scholar he was fascinated by its ruined cities and majestic mountains. Later, he lived in Athens through the dark days of the dictatorship when his political life led back to secret alliances made during the civil war and the earlier occupation, back to murder, starvation and corpse-filled quarries. Lastly he describes the country through the mature eyes of a family man, with the ripened sensibility of an acclaimed poet. This is a precious fusion of experience and insight from one philhellene to all those who have come to love Greece.

(From time immemorial, merchants, pilgrims, and invaders f...)
From time immemorial, merchants, pilgrims, and invaders from East and West have penetrated the high valleys of Afghanistan. In this resonant account, Peter Levi seeks the clues which each migration left, in the company of the young Bruce Chatwin. Since his journey, Afghanistan has suffered forty years of invasion and civil war, making it all the more poignant to rediscover 'this highway of archangels/this theatre of heaven/the light garden of the God-forgiven angel King.'

(The lamentation of the dead has been a preoccupation in P...)
The lamentation of the dead has been a preoccupation in Peter Levi's recent poetry, as well as the subject of his inaugural lecture as Oxford Professor of Poetry in 1984. Few poets of our time have found ways in which to compose such sustained meditations on matters of life and death as Peter Levi has done in these personal yet formal poems. `Shakespeare's Birthday' collects three laments - in memory of Charles Haldeman, Caryl Brahms and Alasdair Clayre - written since those included in `The Echoing Green' (1983), to which this forms a companion volume.

"Shadow and Bone" is Peter Levi's first collection of poems since `Private Ground' (1981), apart from two small books of 'lamentations' - formal elegies for friends - `The Echoing Green' and `Shakespeare's Birthday'. It is a rich and diverse collection, varied in subject and verse-forms. There are sequences about railway posters and America, poems for friends and fellow scholars or poets, poems about marriage and the natural world, epigrams, a magnificent long poem on the meaning of Christmas, and meditative lyrics.

Nothing could be less like a lecture or a sermon than this essay in poetry. Like much of Peter Levi's critical writing, it is direct and intimate in tone, forthright and challenging in its opinions. It communicates the insights of a lifetime's love of poetry, and a knowledge both broad and deep, with passion and conviction. Few contemporary writers have written on poetry with such a blend of candour, discrimination and vision. He ranges widely over poets ancient and modern, the roots of poetry in the common language, and its role and obligations today.

(The work of the great Roman poet, Horatius Flaccus (65 BC...)
The work of the great Roman poet, Horatius Flaccus (65 BC to 8 BC), spanned all aspects of Roman life - politics, the arts, religion, and the authority of the emperor - while his legendary poems (Satires, Odes, Epistles) about friendship, philosophy, love, and sex still have considerable appeal. This biography presents a complete picture of Horace's life and world. It considers the details of Horace's romantic liaisons and why he never married, what the status of his father - a freedman - meant to the poet, and his distinctive brand of philosophy. In this acclaimed biography, Peter Levi, a fellow poet, has produced a thrilling and eminently readable book, the definitive account of Rome's greatest poet and the times during which he lived.
