Ángel María Bautista Castro Argiz

Angel Castro, a wealthy landowner and sugar planter.

Career

  • Angel Castro Argiz can be an example of the man who has built his life himself. At sixteen he was recruited into the Spanish army, and came to Cuba during the second War of Independence. He was also a spanish economical migrant who came back to Cuba in search of the better life.

Don Angel came to Biran between 1910 and 1914, an ex-soldier in the Spanish army, who has returned to Cuba, likes the place. The old road, which links Santiago de Cuba to the north coast of the Eastern Province: Nipe, Mayari and Sagua de Tánamo, was very helpful. These are very fertile lands and their owners, former participants in the War of Independence, which had acquired them after the war, then rented them and lived in Havana and Santiago de Cuba. Then he was recruited and worked as a labourer for the American United Fruit Company. Castro organized a group of men and hired them out to cut down the hardwood forests and plant sugar cane. So Castro prospered and was even able to buy and lease a total of 11,000 hectares of land covered with pine wood, livestock, and sugar cane in the northern part of what was then called province Oriente.
