Paige was born on September 16, 1925 in Tacoma, Washington, United States; the daughter of George and Hazel Leah (Simmons) Tjaden.
Paige graduated from the high school in Tacoma in 1944.
Paige began her career as a singer in local amateur competitions in 1927. In 1944, she moved to Los Angeles and became a vocalist at the Hollywood Canteen. The same year Janis made her debut in the film "Bathing Beauty", playing a beach bunny. Then she signed a contract with Warner Bros. and co-starred in the film "Romance on the High Seas", 1948. Also Paige appeared in the film "Of Human Bondage", 1946 and "Two Gals and a Guy", 1951 and after that she decided to leave Hollywood.
She first appeared on Broadway with Jackie Cooper in a mystery-comedy "Remains to Be Seen", 1951. Paige also toured as a cabaret singer from New York to Miami and from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Her greatest triumph was to come in 1954, playing Babe Williams in "The Pajama Game".
In 1957, Janis returned to Hollywood and starred in such film as "Silk Stockings", 1957, comedy "Please Don't Eat the Daisies", 1960, "Bachelor in Paradise", 1961 and "The Caretakers", 1963. Then she returned to Broadway in 1963 in the short-lived "Here's Love". Also Paige took over the title role in the long-running hit musical "Mame". She later appeared in touring productions of musicals, including "Annie Get Your Gun", "Applause", "Sweet Charity", "Ballroom", "Gypsy: A Musical Fable" and "Guys and Dolls". In 1984, Janis was back on Broadway in a non-musical play "Alone Together".
Also she starred in her own situation comedy "It's Always Jan", which lasted from 1955 to 1956. Paige made her live dramatic TV debut on June 27, 1957, in "The Latch Key" on Lux Video Theatre. In addition, she appeared as troubadour Hallie Martin in The Fugitive episode "Ballad For a Ghost", 1964.
She was a frequent guest on shows such as "Dinah Shore Chevy Show", 1961, "Wagon Train", 1961, "The Dick Powell Show", 1963, "Burke’s Law", 1964, "The Fugitive", 1964, "Red Skelton", 1959-1967, Columbo, 1972 and "Mannix", 1973. Also Paige appeared in the soap operas "Capitol",1987, "General Hospital", 1989-1990 and "Santa Barbara", 1990-1993. In 2001, she starred in an episode of television drama "Family Law".
Paige is a Republican who supported the campaign of Dwight Eisenhower during the 1952 presidential election.
Paige serves as an alternate board member of the Songwriters Guild of America. She was a president of Sunset Plaza Civic Association in 1983.
Paige took the name Janis from a World War I entertainer and Paige after her grandmother’s maiden name.
Paige has been married three times. In 1947, she married Frank Louis Martinelli Jr., with whom she divorced in 1951. Then in 1956, Janis married Arthur Stander and divorced him in 1957. She married Ray Gilbert in 1962. All of Paige's marriages were childless.
