(Humic substances occur in all kinds of aquatic systems, b...)
Humic substances occur in all kinds of aquatic systems, but are particularly important in northern, coniferous areas. They strongly modify the aquatic ecosystems and also constitute a major problem in the drinking water supply. This volume covers all aspects of aquatic humic substances, from their origin and chemical properties, their effects on light and nutrient regimes and biogeochemical cycling, to their role regarding organisms, productivity and food web organization from bacteria to fish. Special emphasis is paid to carbon cycling and food web organization in humic lakes, but aspects of marine carbon cycling related to humus are treated as well.

Hessen was born on July 6, 1956 in Haugesund, Rogaland, Norway; the son of Leif Olav and Gudrun (Kristiansen) Hessen.
Hessen received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1982 and a Master degree in Public Law in 1984 from the University of Oslo. Four years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Biology from the same university.
Hessen began his career as an Assistant professor at the University of Oslo in 1983 and held it for five years. He was a Research leader at Norway Institute of Water Research in 1988-1993.
Since 1993, he has been working as a Professor of the Section for Aquatic Biology and Toxicology at the University of Oslo. His major interests are food web ecology and "ecological stoichiometry" in aquatic food-webs, genetic structure of arctic crustaceans as well as studies of the cellular evolution and regulation of growth rate via rDNA and RNA in various organisms.
