My early research focussed on issues related to the structure of the banking industry (mergers, branch banking, entry, etc). There had been a fair amount of literature in this area in the 1930s, and Chandler set forth a research agenda in a 1938 article, but very little was done until work by Alhadeff in the 1950s. Interest in this subject increased rapidly, due in part to the efforts of the Federal Reserve, the office of the Comptroller of the Currency and FDIC. While at the FDIC my interests shifted to an emphasis on regulation on financial institutions.

The trend toward deregulation of several industries, including financial services, has increased interest in the question of the extent to which market forces can replace regulation and supervision in assuring efficiency and stability of the financial system. Federal deposit insurance plays a key

role in this, and much of my recent research has focussed on the problem of deposit insurance.
