William Wirt Hastings, American congressman. member 64th to 66th Congresses (1915-1921), and 68th to 73d Congresses (1923-1935), 2d Oklahoma District.

  • HASTINGS, William Wirt was born on December 31, 1866 in in Indiana Ty. Son of (of Cherokee parentage) Yell and Louisa J. Hastings.

    • Graduate from Cherokee Male Seminary, 1884. Bachelor of Laws, Vanderbilt University, 1889.

    Career

    • Attorney General for Cherokee Nation, 1891-1895, and has represented same in winding up of tribal affairs at Washington, District of Columbia, since 1890. National Attorney for Cherokee Tribe, 1907-1914. Delegate, at large to Democrat National Convention at Baltimore, 1912.

      Elected to 64-71 Congresses, from Second Oklahoma, Die., Democrat.

    Major achievements

    • On January 22, 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt commissioned him as chief of the Cherokees for one day.
