Arlene Dahl was born on August 11, 1925 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States; the daughter of Rudolph and Idelle (Swan) Dahl.
Dahl attended Washburn High School. She studied at the University of Minnesota from 1943 to 1944.
Dahl worked as a department store model at the begining of the 1940s. In 1945, Dahl made her Broadway debut as Mrs. Taylor in the short-lived musical-comedy-romance "Mr. Strauss Goes to Boston". Then in 1946, she signed a contract with Warner Bros. But her cooperation with Warners was short-lived, with her only role coming in the 1947 release "My Wild Irish Rose".
In 1948, Arlene signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Company and later Paramount Corporation. Her best film work was in "Reign of Terror", 1949, "Three Little Words", 1950, "Here Come the Girls", 1953, "Woman’s World", 1954, "Wicked As They Come", 1957 and "Journey to the Center of the Earth", 1959.
Dahl abandoned her acting career in the late 1950s for the business world. Beginning in 1951, she had written a popular syndicated beauty column.
Later in the 1950s, Arlene took it a step further and started a highly successful company, Arlene Dahl Enterprises, that marketed cosmetics and lingerie. After closing her company in 1967, she began working as a vice president at advertising agency Kenyon and Eckhardt in the same year. Three years later Dahl was appointed for Sears Roebuck & Co. Dahl as director of beauty products.
In the early 1980s, she went back to acting, taking a recurring role on the ABC daytime drama "One Life to Live". In the early 1990s, Dahl once again retired from the screen, this time to write an astrology column.
