Demmel, James W. was born on October 19, 1955 in Pittsburgh.
He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in computer science in 1983 from University of California Berkeley, under the supervision of William Kahan. His dissertation was entitled A Numerical Analyst"s Jordan Canonical Form.
