Mr. Sharma was born in Varanasi, India, on January 13, 1940. He was raised in a family that traditionally worked in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
Arvind Sharma in 1958 obtained his degree of Bachelor of Arts from Allahabad University. In 1970 he completed his studies at Syracuse University, receiving Master of Arts degree. He also was a graduate of Harvard University, from which he earned Master of Theological Studies in 1974 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1978.
In 1962, Mr. Sharma joined the Indian Administrative Service, serving as managing director of Gujarat Industrial Development Corp. and district development officer of the district of Ahmedabad until 1968. From 1972 to 1976 he served as an instructor in economics and statistics at Northeastern University, Boston, MA, and in Buddhism, Hinduism, mysticism, and the great western traditions between 1974 and 1975. Arvind Sharma held the post of a lecturer in religious studies at University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, during 1976-1980.
From 1980 till 1986 Arvind Sharma resumed his office as lecturer at University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia, and senior lecturer in religious studies in 1986-1987. Mr. Sharma worked at Temple University, acting as a visiting assistant professor in 1982-1983. He also was a visiting associate professor at McGill University, 1983-1984. Mr. Sharma was a member of international editorial advisory board, Hindu Dharma, in 1987. For two years he worked as an associate professor at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, 1987-1989, then professor of religious studies strating from 1989 and since 1994 Birks Professor of Comparative Religion.
In 1989 he was appointed visiting lecturer at Concordia University. Since 1990 he held the position of a lecturer at University of California, Santa Barbara. Later he occupied such positions as: visiting research scholar at Boston University, 1991-1992; visiting scholar at Harvard University, 1991-1992, visiting lecturer at G. B. Pant Institute of Social Science Research, 1994, fellow of Center for the Study of World Religions, Center for the Study of Values in Public Life, and Center for Business and lecturer at Government at John F. Kennedy School of Government, 1995-1996, 1996.
Most notably, he was given, in 1994, the Birks chair of Comparative Religion and has not left it since then. He was still working at the Faculty of Religious Studies in 2017, making it his 30th year of service with McGill University.
Arvind Sharma was a contributor to Project on the History of Indian Science, Philosophy, and Culture run by Government of India. He is also known to be a member of council of trustees at Temple of Understanding.
Arvind Sharma has been a contributor to books, including The Politics of Region and Social Change, Hindu Spirituality, Religion and Human Rights; contributor of more than ninety articles and reviews to periodicals, including Numen, Zygon, Journal of the American Oriental Society, Religious Studies, Philosophy East and West, and Journal of Indian History.
